About Us

From Our Family to Yours

Thank you for visiting our family farm website. We are excited to be producing delicious Nutty Squirrel Hazelnuts for our community.

Originally, the land was part of an Oregon Homestead. Eventually, the 21-acre portion we bought was filled north to south, east to west, with Christmas trees and lots of weeds. Gary and I, along with our 3 children cleared the land. Lots of manual labor because we did not have big machinery. However, for us, this process helped build a deep love and pride for our land.

Our first business we established was in 1987 called Oregon Dried Floral. We rented a small warehouse and saved every cent! After several years, we were able to build on our land. When we first moved into the warehouse on the land, the inside was not completely finished and we had a porta potty as our bathroom. Beginning to feel like true farmers.

We started with dried and fresh flowers and built a second warehouse as the business grew. As Gary and I aged and had health issues, our oldest daughter Kristin took over and managed the warehouses and field while Gary returned to teaching and coaching, another one of his true passions. With time, our family grew and moved on to new adventures. Bringing us two granddaughter, two grandsons and dog Eddie.

In order to keep the land zoned agriculture, we decided it was time for a new adventure. We studied our options and decided to learn and plant hazelnut trees. In 2016 we established Hawk Hollow Farm, LLC, the home of the Nutty Squirrel Hazelnuts. Gary and his two grandsons planted every tree themselves (more Gary than grandsons, but they did help). Gary cares for the land, making sure the trees are taken care of. It took 4 years of tender loving care before our first harvest. We hope you enjoy our Nutty Squirrel Hazelnuts from our beloved farm.

Sincerely,

Gail Hertzog
